Life can be a thrilling journey, filled with unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes, we’re just passengers, but other times, we get behind the wheel, and occasionally, we meet someone who changes our lives forever.
That’s exactly what happened to Latonya Young and Kevin Esch. Back in May 2018, Latonya was driving for Uber and picked up Kevin after an Atlanta United soccer game. During their two-and-a-half-hour drive, they started chatting and quickly found a genuine connection.
Latonya and Kevin talked about their lives, sharing personal stories and challenges. Kevin opened up about his recent divorce, while Latonya shared her struggles, including working late to pay a utility bill.
Latonya, a single mother of three, also revealed her dream of going back to college. She had started at Georgia State University in 2010 but had to drop out because she couldn’t afford the tuition. Her dream of finishing college seemed out of reach—until she made a promise to Kevin.
Kevin was so moved by their conversation that he gave Latonya a $150 tip for her utility bill and asked her to keep him updated on her college plans. “I had my mind made up that I wanted to go back to school,” Latonya recalled.
A few weeks later, Latonya tried to re-enroll at Georgia State but was told she had a $693 balance from her previous studies that needed to be settled first. Kevin, wanting to help, paid off the debt without telling Latonya.
“I didn’t want that to be a roadblock,” Kevin said. “I was in a position to help, and it was the right thing to do.”
Latonya was overwhelmed by Kevin’s generosity. Although she offered to repay him, Kevin simply asked her to “pay me back by graduating.” And graduate she did—twice!
Latonya returned to school in December 2019 to pursue an associate’s degree in criminal justice. Kevin was there to cheer her on at her graduation. Later, while working as a substitute teacher and hairstylist, Latonya went back to school for a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Again, Kevin was in the stands on graduation day, feeling immense pride as Latonya’s name was called.
Latonya now aims to become a federal probation officer and is also releasing a book titled “From Broken to Blessed.” In her book, she reflects on how one special Uber ride transformed her life.
“He motivated me,” Latonya says of Kevin, her Uber passenger who became a lifelong friend and supporter.
