That neighbor is Caleb, a seven-year-old first-grader who lives next door with his grandmother. Darrien Middleton, Wilma's granddaughter, explained the significance of the relationship between Wilma and Caleb. They have become inseparable despite their stark differences. Wilma's fierce determination to stay in her cherished home, where she has resided for 38 years, is a testament to her independence. Every morning, she follows her routine of waking up, brewing a cup of coffee, and heading straight to her front porch.
Wilma has been fighting lung and breast cancer for the past two years, and Darrien, who is a full-time student working overnight shifts at a local hospital, relies on the support of friends and neighbors to assist Wilma with doctor appointments and chemotherapy treatments. Among the caring individuals in the neighborhood, Caleb's attentiveness stands out.
Caleb's involvement in Wilma's life began with a shared meal, as many great relationships do. Wilma prepared an extra plate of food and generously gave it to Caleb, who was overwhelmed with gratitude for the steak dinner. Since that moment, Caleb has been visiting Wilma four or five times a day, ensuring she wakes up from her naps, offering assistance, and engaging in heartfelt conversations.
When Darrien had the opportunity to meet Caleb during a recent visit to Wilma's house, she was deeply moved by his kindness and pure heart. She recognized that Caleb's story deserved to be shared with the world. Despite his humble background, Caleb radiates love and joy. He can effortlessly break into a dance, express his love for school, and make others laugh until tears flow. This remarkable child has become a source of support and comfort for Wilma during her most challenging days.
