In the old days of media, anybody who wanted to perform or to be on the big stage would need to “get discovered.” In the traditional sense, that could mean years and years of work.
If you spend much time looking around YouTube, you’re liable to find some incredibly talented people.
More specifically, it would be a lot of work leading up to two or three important gatekeepers working at big movie or music companies… and their word was basically the final say.
As it turns out, that’s definitely not the case anymore.
If you were to get online today, you can find all kinds of professional and amateur musicians posting videos side-by-side.
Instead of relying only on one outlet or one person’s opinion, young artists can now connect with a wide audience organically based purely on their talent. And that’s exactly what’s happening for funk group Scary Pockets.
For those who don’t know, Scary Pockets is a funk group with rotating line-ups that does all kinds of different musical performances on YouTube. They have plenty of different performance videos available, but some of them have gotten more traction than others.
The one we’re talking about today was posted in August 2018.
As it turns out, the song they’re performing is “I Say A Little Prayer,” a famous song originally performed by Dionne Warwick.
The original song was written by Burt Bacharach and given to Warwick, though it was also famously covered by Aretha Franklin as well.
The Franklin version is probably more well-known, and it’s also the version that Scary Pockets decided to take on. As the video begins, One of the artists in the background does a quick count in.
After that, the female vocalists sing a quick harmony—and then the whole band is off and running.
Although the lead vocalist seems nothing like Aretha Franklin, his voice sounds incredibly beautiful!
From the very start, he has no problem hitting the high notes and communicating all of the song’s emotion. Before long, the whole group is in a great groove and is doing the song justice—but they still find a way to make the whole thing all their own.
While they’re all completely on point, one of the most infectious things about the video is how much fun they seem to be having together!
Since the clip was posted online, it has more than a million views (and is only going up from there)!
Although this performance is definitely a standout, it’s far from the only one that the group has on its channel.
If you liked this performance, be sure to browse their channel for more videos. In particular, their reinvention of “Wonderwall” by Oasis is worth checking out… and it even features Darren Criss of Glee fame. Just as with the Franklin cover, Scary Pockets does it justice while still making it completely their own and reinventing it.
Above all, performances like these are a great example of what makes YouTube great.
Although taking away all the gatekeepers can mean that the market gets flooded with too much content to sift through, finding a hidden gem like these guys makes the whole thing worth it.
Special thanks to Scary Pocket for all their funky covers! Be sure to watch the entire performance in the link below:
