For this story, we need to kick it all the way back to the year 2011. That’s the year a 13-year-old singer named Rebecca Black released a catchy little song called “Friday.”
When she posted the video on YouTube, she became an overnight viral sensation. She was cute, she was quirky, and her song was the earworm to end all earworms. Today, the video has a staggering 121 million views.
But while the video was released in the spirit of fun, the reaction she received from many online was far from it. Black was sadly confronted with a barrage of bullying that has followed her ever since.
“The song should be banned.” “My ears are bleeding.” Those are just two of the millions of comments Black had to deal with at a time when all kids care what other people think. Your teenage years are hard and confusing enough on their own, let alone when you’re under a cruel microscope.
That’s why the now 20-year-old recently appeared on a show called “The Four” to reclaim the narrative. The gorgeous young woman wants to get back to her music-loving roots, to a time before YouTube stardom totally upended her life.
“No one can prep you for that kind of a thing,” she explained through tears. “There’s something so brutal when you’re 13 about people telling you that you don’t belong here.”
She was about to give up on her music, but she found the strength in herself to carry on. “You should never let anyone tell you that what you love to do is wrong,” she said. “I am ready to show everyone who has doubted me, who has left all those comments, that I do deserve to be here.”
And with that, she took to the stage to sing a stripped-down version of N*Sync’s iconic song “Bye, Bye, Bye.” Everyone was stunned when they heard her incredible voice, a far cry from the green, untrained chops of her younger years.
Her stage presence had everyone cheering and her voice? Well, that speaks (or sings) for itself.
Listen to her story and her incredible performance down below and if you’re impressed by her vocals, definitely share her redemption round with everyone you know!
